We’ve all heard the voices of virtual assistants, Alexa, Siri and Cortana.
AI-driven technology is now in our homes, at work and online too. The technology is quickly growing and it’s predicted that the “global spending on AI will grow to $7.3 billion a year by 2022, up from $2 billion in 2018.”
But what actually is AI?
“AI is an area of computer science that aims to decipher data from the natural world often using cognitive technologies designed to understand and complete tasks that humans have taken on in the past.”
The concept of AI and the extent to how it should be used and where it should be used is heavily debated.
The Smart Data Collective posted an article earlier this year looking at the ‘Myths’ of AI and dispelling the idea that AI technology is more harmful than good.
One of the main criticisms that the article highlights towards AI is that the new technology could be a threat to jobs. Critics suggest that companies are now looking to invest in AI technologies rather than people.
However, the Smart Data Collective, argue that AI is to be used in a collaborative way and works with humans rather than against them. As well, the “main purpose of AI would be to help people focus on core activities while using the technology for research.”
Another benefit of the technology that the article points to is that it will be able to analyse a huge amount of data as well as “identify trending topics, hashtags and patterns”. In relation to social media, this would be beneficial in saving time and money as well as allowing those who work in the sector to spend time focusing on other elements.
Another ‘myth’ that the article highlights is that AI runs entirely on it’s own. However, a lot of AI technology actually requires humans, whether this be to operate or oversea the technology.
Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are no strangers to AI, using it to help improve user experience. Facebook even has their own dedicated AI research lab – which is “committed to advancing the new technologies to give people better ways to communicate.”
AI technology provides these platforms with intelligent data that can help them to rethink their strategies and improve the overall experience for their users.
While there are concerns surrounding AI technology, it has so far proven itself both beneficial and effective. In relation to the way it’s used in social media, it is providing platforms (i.e. Facebook) with intelligent data that can help them to rethink their strategies and improve the overall experience for their users.
It’s fair to say that this isn’t the first time there has been apprehension towards new technologies.
Digitalisation, for example, has completely transformed the way we now communicate with each other.
Whether we like it or not, technology is constantly evolving, which means adapting and keeping an open mind when it comes to new technologies. We should be able to work with it rather than fight against it.
