Kylie Jenner: 'Self-Made' Billionaire? - Epic Social

The latest front cover of business magazine, Forbes, has got everyone talking.

Last week, the youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner family, Kylie Jenner, appeared on the front cover donning a slicked-back hairstyle and black blazer, with a caption that read:

“At 21, she’s set to be the youngest-ever self-made billionaire. Welcome to the era of extreme fame leverage.”

The magazine reported that since founding makeup brand, ‘Kylie Cosmetics’ in February 2016, Jenner has sold more than $630 million worth of products.

Forbes have estimated the reality star’s net worth at around $900 million and report she’s on track to become the youngest person on the “fourth annual ranking of America’s Richest Self-Made Women”, aka the youngest self-made billionaire ever.

Since the cover went live, the story has gone viral and caused much debate. However, it’s not the amount of money that’s causing the controversy, but rather the use of the term “self-made”.

Twitter users have expressed their frustration at Forbes for using the term to describe Jenner, arguing that she is not self-made and has been helped along by the fact she was born into wealth and fame.

Kylie Jenner reportedly used her savings from modelling and other endorsement deals (estimated $250,000) to create 15,000 lip kits and launch Kylie Cosmetics. weighted in on the debate with this post:

The post (at the time of writing this) has gained 61K retweets and 151K likes. It appears as if many people do not agree that Jenner should be classed as “self-made” due to her background. However, others have argued back that Jenner should be commended for the business she has built and how she has used her platform to do so.

Yes, Kylie Jenner has been more fortunate than others to have a successful family who have the resources (money, reputation and platform) to help Jenner along. However, rather than simply live off her family’s fortune, it can’t be argued that Jenner has used what she has access to in order to create and build her own personal brand. The youngest Kardashian-Jenner was only 10 when she first appeared on the reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians and has since always been in the spotlight.

Should we really look down or dismiss an individual due to the fact they were born into a wealthy family.

I agree that it is extremely more difficult and challenging for an individual who doesn’t have these resources to start from the bottom and work their way to the top – and this of course should be commended.

Maybe “self-made” was the not correct term for Forbes to use, however we can’t deny that Jenner has created her own fortune by building a successful business and brand around herself, at such a young age.

What do you think?

Would you class Kylie Jenner as “self-made”?
